The Carbon Intensity Plot Twist: Why Propane Beats Electricity

When was the last time someone told you propane is cleaner than electricity?

Exactly. You don’t hear it—because the narrative machine is busy chanting “electrify everything,” whether the numbers support it or not. But let’s zoom out of the echo chamber and look at the actual carbon math.

Carbon intensity measures how much CO₂ is released per unit of energy. Lower number = cleaner energy.
Here’s the jaw-dropper:

  • Propane CI score: 79
  • U.S. electricity grid average: 100–140

If electricity is supposedly the “greener” option, that makes no sense… until you dig into where electricity actually comes from.

Only about 22% of U.S. electricity comes from wind, solar, or hydro. The rest?

  • Nearly 20% coal
  • Nearly 20% nuclear
  • And the largest chunk: natural gas

So that “clean electricity” message? It’s piggybacking on a very dirty mix.

Don’t take my word for it—search MISO Energy and look at the Midwest’s live generation mix at any given moment. It’s a whole lot less green than the slogans make it sound.

The truth they skip:

Propane already starts cleaner and stays consistent no matter where you live. Electricity swings wildly based on regional grid fuel sources.

Propane doesn’t need a PR department. It needs a megaphone.
